WE Pledge to Use our WITS

Today we launched our WITS program with an Assembly. Constable Joe came by to help us Pledge to use our WITS.

WITS is the program we use to help students deal with conflict on the yard.  It teaches children the progressive steps to use when solving a problem, especially on the yard.

  1. WALK AWAY
  2. IGNORE
  3. TALK IT OUT
  4. SEEK HELP

This program is supported by our local police, and families are encouraged to learn and use these strategies at home.

When something goes wrong you can choose which tool to use.  Should you walk away?  Sometimes that is a good choice and solves the potential problem.

At other times you can ignore the person who is bothering you.  If those two strategies don’t seem to be working, you can talk to the person. Let them know that what they’re doing is bothering you and ask them to stop.

Many times, we assume the other person knows they’re bothering us but that is not always the case. Using our words is an important skill that children need to practice.

Sometimes you need to get some help from an adult or your friends .

As issues arise, we try to model and encourage the children to use their WITS.

There is some great information for families on the WITS website.

St. Gregory’s Running Across Canada

As part of our  quest to be a Certified Healthy School  our Grade 1-3 students are spending 10 minutes a day running!

We launched the Get Healthy Challenge on the first day of school, during our assembly.

Our Grade 3 students are leading everyone as we count the kilometers and track them on a map.

So far we have logged 772 KM!   Not bad for 3 days.

KM run as of Sept 6

You can follow along as we keep on running all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

We started in St John’s Newfoundland on Sept 4, and have run all the way past Corner Brook  and are on our way to Channel Port Aux Basques.  This week we will hop on a ferry bound for Nova Scotia

We encourage you to take some time and talk with your child about physical activity and how to build a healthy body.  You can also look at a map of Canada and talk about all the different provinces and amazing parts of Canada.

If you have a relative who lives along our path let us know and we will give a shout out as we run by 😊

Keep Running!

Welcome To A New School Year

Welcome Back Everyone

I hope you are enjoying the last few days of summer holidays. No doubt you are picking out backpacks, lunch boxes and new outfits in preparation for the new school year.

We are back in the office getting things ready for the first day on Wednesday, Sept 4. Teachers are busy  preparing lessons and the classrooms.

Our Library has a new look which is AWESOME!  They took out the old carpet and put in a beautiful new floor.

If you are new to our school, I extend you a sincere welcome. I know I am a bit biased, but this is an AMAZING school community. Please drop by and introduce yourself.  Consider joining us for a Catholic School Council meeting or volunteer to read with children. You can also attend any of our school masses and our Welcome Back BBQ and Open House.

A couple reminders that help things run smooth:

Label Everything with your child’s name. You would be amazed at the number of items we send to Goodwill every year because they are unclaimed. A permanent marker works fine but we also have an account with Mable’s Labels if you wish to buy labels . Find our school listed under Support a Fundraiser (note: you need to put the period after the ‘St’ in St. Gregory to find us in the list.

If your child is absent, please call and let us know. Call the school and  leave a message or if you know in advance you can put a note in their Agenda. If you don’t call, we will be calling you as every child must be accounted for every day.

For those who use the Extended Day Program you must also call Lyse Lachapelle if your child will not be attending.

Follow us on Facebook. This school year we will be increasing the information we share with families. We will provide tips, ways to support learning at home, reminders and other helpful information. If you don’t use Facebook you can also check our school website for Blog posts and articles under Parent Information.

Weekly Updates. Every Sunday we send out a Week At a Glance ( WAG).  This gives you the important information for the upcoming week. Please ensure we have your preferred email.

See you all soon!

Mrs. Perrault

School Bell Time Changes for September 2019

Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario (STEO) is changing school bus pickup and drop off schedules for fall 2019 for CDSBEO and UCDSB in the Northwestern region of the school districts, affecting mainly Lanark County, Smiths Falls, and some schools in Leeds County.

The changes will create a consistent 8:00 a.m. start time for secondary schools, and start times for elementary schools between 9:15 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

Parents will have received a letter which went home with their child yesterday, as well, a parent survey to collect feedback on childcare requirements in light of these changes was included for families with children in grades JK to grade 6. Please ensure that these surveys are returned to the school before June 7, 2019.

To learn more about specific changes to school bus service, visit www.steo.ca/belltimechanges or call STEO at 1.855.441.1589.
